A tragic turn of events unfolded as a horse trainer, facing accusations of murder and rape involving a showjumper with whom he had an undisclosed relationship, was discovered deceased prior to the commencement of his trial’s second day.

Jonathan Creswell, 36, initially denied the charges of murder and rape involving the tragic death of Katie Simpson, 21, at the residence they both lived in with Ms. Simpson’s sister in Gortnessy Meadows, Lettershandoney, Northern Ireland on August 3, 2020.

Creswell resided with Ms. Simpson’s sister, Christina Simpson, with whom he had a longstanding relationship.

In Coleraine, the Londonderry Crown Court heard that he became envious when Katie started dating another person.

The couple reportedly first crossed paths during his time as a jockey at Darton Ree Stables in Tynan, Co Armagh.

Prosecutors alleged that he initially tried to assert that her death was a suicide, but later changed his story, saying he found her body.

On Wednesday morning, it was reported to jurors that Creswell had passed away at his residence while he was out on bail.

– A member of law enforcement informed the jury that a deceased individual was discovered at approximately 9am on Wednesday. The victim’s identity was later confirmed by a relative.

The coroner has been informed, and the death is not considered suspicious.

A spokesperson from the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that officers responded to the unexpected passing of a man at a residence in the Waterside area of Londonderry earlier today. The authorities have determined that the death is not considered suspicious.

Two women have been charged with obstructing justice in connection with the case, while a third woman is accused of failing to provide information. The BBC has reported that they will face sentencing next month.
